For most parts of Wales it will feel mild over the next day or so, thanks to southwesterly winds. Temperatures could reach highs of 18°C as warm weather is dragged up from southern Europe.

Welsh weather presenter Sue Charles said for people to make the most of Friday because there will be a welcome return of "warmer weather" for the end of the week. But it is not set to last as it will be turning colder from the north and west over the weekend

The Met Office outlook for Wales looks like it will remain dull, but forecasters say it will "feel warm in any sunshine". The highest temperature recorded in Wales this year was 18.1 °C in Cardiff last Saturday. For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter

Met Office forecaster Annie Shuttleworth said: "I think wherever you are you will definitely notice the humidity as it will start to be a little bit muggy. Highs of 20Cs are possible across parts of the south east, but actually even up towards the north coast of Scotland we could see highs of about 17C or 18C." The Met Office forecast for Wales on Friday says: "Often cloudy through the morning with some rain or drizzle in the north and west. Brighter spells developing in the east through the afternoon, and feeling warm in the sunshine." The outlook for the weekend adds: "Bright spells on Saturday, with patchy rain in the north and west. Sunshine and occasional showers on Sunday."

But showers that will be "more widespread and heavier" return on Monday with temperatures "returning to average". The Met Office forecast for the UK says: "The UK will receive a brief period of milder weather, leading to some warm spells of sunshine and mild nights, before temperatures return to average for the new working week"

There is some better news on the horizon, in the Met Office long range forecast for the end of April into May.

It says: "Through the latter part of April, high pressure will probably be close to the UK with a good deal of dry weather for many areas. Over time these settled conditions will probably move northwards, with the driest weather across the northwest of the UK as we move into May. Temperatures will probably rise above average overall, with warm days but some colder nights."
