HANGING BASKETS
There has been a very good response to the hanging baskets and, on the whole, people are very pleased with them. There have been one or two negative responses but mostly people feel that the town is now loved. The summer baskets will be followed by winter baskets in due course.
HERBERT STREET GARDEN
The garden in the centre of Herbert Street has also been planted. The planting is different to most municipal gardens in that we have tried to be more creative with the plants both in colour and form. Most plants are evergreen and all plants, even if they do lose their leaves in winter, the time that the stems are bare will be very short. In the autumn we will be under planting the foliage with daffodils. These daffodils will be sourced from Welsh growers and producers only. It is the Town Council policy to try to keep the money that is spent by the Town Council within Wales and as close to our own area as possible.
TREBANOS PARK
The new seating has not yet been installed in the park, due to a delay in the tarmac work needed before installation; however, we hope to see the new seating soon. Vandalism in the park is now pleasingly very low due to the CCTV.
UNDERPASS FROM HERBERT STREET TO THE NEW RETAIL PARK ALONG THE LINE OF THE CANAL.
The Town Council has had the underpass cleaned and the walls painted. An anti graffiti gel paint has been added to try to stem the wall painting. There was great difficulty in applying the gel paint, due to the time scale between painting over the graffiti and allowing it to dry before the gel could be painted on. The first attempt left the walls vulnerable to graffiti artists, when the painters returned the following day to put on the gel they found that, overnight, the whole of the underpass, including the roof, had been spray painted. The painters then gave the walls a thick coat of paint and waited around through the day for the paint to dry and they then put on the anti graffiti gel before they left in the evening.
However, there has only been partial success for this venture as the anti graffiti gel does not stop the graffiti but it does make it easier to clean off and, therefore, this can be done more often.
This was a joint project between the Pontardawe Town Council and the County Borough.
